Fare Structure

Metrorail uses a distance-based fare system. The further you travel, the more you pay. Fares also vary by time of day — peak fares apply during rush hours on weekdays, while off-peak fares apply at all other times.

Peak Hours

Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours. Off-peak fares apply at all other times, including federal holidays regardless of the day of the week.

Transfers & SmarTrip

Transfer Rules

  • Rail-to-rail transfers are included in your fare during a continuous trip
  • Rail-to-bus transfers give a $0.50 discount on the connecting Metrobus fare with SmarTrip
  • Bus-to-rail transfers do not receive a discount
  • Transfers are valid for up to 2 hours from the start of your trip
