Metrorail uses a distance-based fare system. The further you travel, the more you pay. Fares also vary by time of day — peak fares apply during rush hours on weekdays, while off-peak fares apply at all other times.

Peak fares are charged during weekday rush hours. Off-peak fares apply at all other times, including federal holidays regardless of the day of the week.
